INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION CANNABISWIRTSCHAFT E.V. (IN FORMATION) – DEMAND FOR MEDICAL CANNABIS IMPORTS EXPECTED TO GROW BY 37% TO 28,455 KG IN 2020
COVID-RELATED DOUBTS REGARDING THE PLANNED 650 KG DOMESTIC CULTIVATION IN GERMANY
Berlin, 2020-08-30: A recently published response from the German federal government to a parliamentary inquiry by Dr. Schinnenburg (MP) and the FDP parliamentary group reveals that imports of medical cannabis continue to grow and are expected to reach a new high in 2020 with 28,455 kg requested.
“As representatives of the cannabis industry, we see a steadily growing and stable market in the field of medical cannabis. This confirms our forecasts,” said Dr. Armin Prasch, Vice President and Head of the Medical Cannabis Division of the German Industry Association Cannabiswirtschaft. “The expected increase of around 37% compared to 2019 can be attributed to the growing familiarity among physicians with therapeutic applications and the increased demand from patients. This may be explained by the changing public perception regarding the therapeutic potential of cannabis,” Dr. Prasch continued.
However, the federal government no longer rules out that “the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic across many sectors of the economy could cause a delay in the start of deliveries” of domestically grown cannabis. For 2020, the government had reported 650 kg of dried cannabis flowers for cultivation in Germany to the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB).
“We also represent a number of importers who welcome this development and are prepared to meet the challenges of a continuously increasing demand for medical cannabis products,” added Dr. Prasch (Vice President, BvCW).
